September Meeting moved to Monday the 8th! Be sure to read the Forum Rules before posting
Whoever keeps breaking glass on Sylvan Island needs to STOP please. I was riding with a mentally challenged friend this past Sunday, and we both got flat tires. I was there the previous Friday, and I did not see as much glass. Please be considerate of other FORC members. My friend could have been seriously injured.
Yeah... the glass... I think broken glass makes up about 5% of the soil composition at Sylvan. We have picked up glass by the bag full, expect we'll get plenty more bag fulls.
I think I could almost guarantee that no cyclist is breaking glass, certainly not a FORC member (as we're the only ones who clean it up). However, there are many "users" of Sylvan Island, of which we're the Cleaners.
We do our best, but when on Sylvan, Watch for Glass.

Nate and I have been talking about when to plan a Sylvan work day. The Taming of the Slough Adventure Race is on August 23rd, and the island is part of that race. We had talked about Saturday 8-9-08 or Sunday 8-10-08 for a work day. John and I rode Ben Butterworth Sunday and spun around part of Sylvan. It's not as bad as I thought it would look, but of course it's not in great shape. For those that can help with a work day, would Saturday 8-9-08 or Sunday 8-10-08 work better?
Becky/Nate,
Scot & I would like to help, but on Saturday the 9th we will be in Madison WI, volunteering our livers to the Great American Beer Fest. With over 500 beers to sample, we will literally have our hands full. Not sure when we'll get back into QC on Sunday... We do have Aug. 3rd & Aug. 16th open, or sometime after work on a weekday, if you think that this island may require more than one cleanup day.

500 beers? Oh goodness! Talk about being in Heaven!
Thanks for your willing helping hand!!! Always appreciate it!
Because it rains so frequently, we wanted to factor in a cushion to get the Island looking good before the 23rd. That's why we picked 2 weeks before the adventure race so that if we did get rained out on our first weekend, there was another weekend left before the race (and the fact that Nate won't be in town the weekend of the 16th). Wondering though if we move it up to the 3rd before the race if that we be too far in advance that weeds grow back enough that we would have to trim again before the race.
I'll post a separate Sylvan work day post and get some discussion going. John and I can be available any of those times discussed.
One thing that really helps minimize the impact of glass is tire pressure. Riding with slightly lower pressure than normal (most people ride w/ too much pressure anyway) will absorb some of those sharp edges and your tire won't puncture as easily.
The breaking of glass on Sylvan is definitely NOT an activity of FORC members...
Please see other post regarding trail day.
Nate
Somebody just needs to invent a "glass magnet!" Wouldn't to rock?
