    Default Caleb's Trail-Aug 14

We are looking for 10 volunteers to help build a trail for Caleb. Caleb's is a 12yo boy with, despite his many disabilities loves the outdoors! His family approached FORC to help them build a trail where Caleb would have a quite place to play in the woods. Drew and Bill took look at the area and found the project very doable and would take about 5-6 hours of trail work to complete.
Trail date is Sunday, August 14th at 9:00am. Post-up if you can help. As we get closer to the date we will post-up more details and a list of tools needed.

    Thank you,
    Mandy

I can help out. I have some contacts at the Illinois/Iowa center for independent living in case we need some advise on building accessible trails. They don't necessarily make trails, but they do make wheelchair ramps and help people make their living arrangements accessible. They may also have some volunteers or can help with promoting the trail once it is open to other people with disabilities if it is going to be open to the public.

Surge, the trail is private and accessibility guidelines might not apply. Feel free to ask for some tips though and pass them along. We'll be making the trail wider than normal (3 ft vs 2 ft).

    Summary of the work involved:
    • 90 yds of benching to traverse the ravine slope and get to the bottom. Rogue hoes, flat shovels, and a couple wheelbarrows needed.
    • 90 yds of weed trimming for a loop in a clearing at the bottom of the ravine. String trimmers and a chainsaw are needed.
    • Short 5-6 riser timber/dirt stair around a switchback turn (something like this). In need of a powerful corded drill to make holes in the timbers for anchors. Battery drills are not well suited for drilling these holes. Have 1/2" x 16" auger bit.
    • Installing 12" x 3' culvert and building up trail over a drainage.

Overview of the work site and overlay of trail route:

I'll be bringing 7 rogue hoes, 5 flat shovels, a wheelbarrow, and some tools for building the stairs (don't have a corded drill). If you're bringing any of the other items post it.

Really HUGE Thank You to everyone who came out today to help work on Caleb's trail. The trail is complete and we'll try to post pictures. Caleb and his family were really excited and thankful for their new trail. FORC volunteers are the best and special thanks to our best trail building gnomes Drew and Bill. Without your eye for building trails this project would not have been the success it was! :cheers
